Negative Group Velocity

چکیده
In more detail, consider a classical model of matter in which spectral lines are associated with oscillators. In particular, consider a gas of atoms with two closely spaced spectral lines of angular frequencies ω1,2 = ω0 ± Δ/2, where Δ ω0. Each line has the same damping constant (and spectral width) γ. Ordinarily, the gas would exhibit strong absorption of light in the vicinity of the spectral lines. But suppose that lasers of frequencies ω1 and ω2 pump the both oscillators into inverted populations. This can be described classically by assigning negative oscillator strengths to these oscillators. Deduce an expression for the group velocity vg(ω0) of a pulse of light centered on frequency ω0 in terms of the (univalent) plasma frequency ωp of the medium, given by

On Group Velocity of Elastic Waves, in an Anisotropic Plate
The equivalence of the energy velocity and the group velocity is often taught in university physics. An early proof of the equivalence of the two velocities for one-dimensional water waves was given by Rayleigh [1]. In the 1950s and 1960s many studies [2}4] were done to show the equivalence of the two velocities for more general systems. Later, in the 1990s, Awati and Howes raised a question as...
متن کاملA survey of intracranial blood flow velocity in thalassemia intermedia in Khuzestan Province, Iran
Background: Beta-thalassemia intermedia (BTI) is a type of hemoglobinopathy with an increased risk of cerebrovascular accidents, and transcranial cerebral Doppler ultrasonography (TCD) through determining the mean cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) can serve to predict the risk of a developing stroke. This study aims to compare patients with beta-thalassemia intermedia and healthy individuals ...
متن کاملElectromagnetic Wave Propagation in Non- Local Media — Negative Group Velocity and Beyond
We study theoretically the propagation of electromagnetic waves in an infinite and homogenous medium with both temporal and spatial dispersion included. We derive a partial differential equation connecting temporal and spatial dispersion to achieve negative group velocity. Exact solutions of the equation are found and shown to lead to the possibility of exciting constant negative group velocity...
متن کاملAbnormal Wave Propagation in Passive Media
Abnormal velocities in passive structures such as one-dimensional (1-D) photonic crystals and a slab having a negative index of refraction are discussed. In the case of 1-D photonic crystal, the frequencyand time-domain experiments for waves tuned to the bandgap of the photonic crystal demonstrate a positive group velocity exceeding the speed of light in vacuum (superluminal). In the case of a ...
متن کاملObservation of Wave Packet Distortion during a Negative-Group-Velocity Transmission
In Physics, causality is a fundamental postulation arising from the second law of thermodynamics. It states that, the cause of an event precedes its effect. In the context of Electromagnetics, the relativistic causality limits the upper bound of the velocity of information, which is carried by electromagnetic wave packets, to the speed of light in free space (c). In anomalously dispersive media...
متن کاملNegative Group Velocity Superluminal Propagation in Optical Fibers Using Stimulated Brillouin Scattering
We demonstrated the superluminal propagation at negative group velocity using stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in optical fibers. In the scheme, the Stokes wave is circulated back into the ring cavity for Brillouin lasing to enhance the peak loss. The experiment demonstrated the superluminal light propagation can be realized by increasing the input signal power. The largest time advancemen...
